When you think of Florida’s left coast it’s easy to instantly picture miles upon miles of pristine, wide-open sugary beaches. While yes, this paradisiacal backdrop is surely a major feature of the destination, Sarasota County offers up an expansive region more than just beaches, thriving with natural beauty, history, cuisine and some of the best art in the state.

The City of Sarasota itself is located just a short walk from these incredible beaches, while offering world-class restaurants, vibrant nightlife, iconic museums and culture — the County’s namesake city center is teeming with life at every corner! Many don’t realize (myself included until my own visit), just how expansive this county is and all of the amazing opportunities for exploration.

Living in Tampa Bay makes the ride to Sarasota a breeze (under 45 minutes) and the perfect excuse for a road trip. We were hosted by The Sarasota Modern, a luxury boutique hotel in the heart of downtown Sarasota.

The Sarasota Modern offers an urban oasis with 89-rooms boasting spacious accommodations, a lush outdoor pool deck and upscale restaurant and bar options. Pro tip: ask for one of the king rooms featuring a clawfoot balcony bathtub for ultimate vacation relaxation! Our balcony tub was the absolute perfect way to unwind in privacy and catch an epic sunset.

We made our way to the outdoor pool area where there is definitely tons of room to roam and to find a sweet spot for sun-bathing and enjoyment. Featuring a swimming pool, cold spa plunge pool, hot tub, lounge seating, private cabanas, a bar/juice bar and games, catching some sun has never felt more modern.

Did I mention that the pool bar offers the best sunset happy hour in town? I was so excited to find frozen cocktails available and best of all, organic fruit bases that can be consumed with or without alcohol for a refreshing ice-cold beverage at any time. Fun fact, locals can join the Modern Family, with an exclusive monthly guest membership that offers premium access to the hotel pool and facilities.

Reaching an expansive 725 square miles and spanning from Longboat Key to Manasota Key, Sarasota County boasts a variety of scenery and activities that make it the perfect destination for couples, groups and travelers of all ages. There’s no shortage of shoreline, outdoor activities, entertainment and museums, regardless of if you’re in downtown or on Siesta Key.

We encountered some rain on our first day and decided to seek shelter with the clowns at the Ringling Circus Museum. I’ve excitedly read about the one-of-a-kind circus artifacts and rare artworks and knew that a visit to the Ringling Museum was a must during my time in Sarasota. The legacy left behind by John and Mable Ringling (who achieved success in the early 20th century as part of the Ringling circus) the museum offers more than just circus artifacts and whimsical pieces. The 66-acre compound and ample gardens overlook Sarasota Bay and offer a scenic backdrop unlike any in the region.

Along with the coveted pieces in the art museum and over-the-top circus creations, one of my favorite aspects of the property is the exquisite Ca’ d’Zan Mansion, or “Casa de Zan” which translates to “House of John.” The Gothic Venetian and Moorish- inspired architecture render the house a spectacle on the Bay. Tours of the mansion include the grand ballroom, solarium, the central living room, dining room and kitchen, all immaculately furnished as if the Ringlings’ still reside. Private tours are available to explore the upper levels. Make sure to snag a glimpse of the view from the mosaic tiled terrace and a stroll through the Rose Garden. I for one would love to attend a wedding or event at this exquisite estate under the banyan trees.

We continued on a series of adventures throughout Sarasota the next day as a quick car-ride from our hotel afforded us access to so much. The weather was perfect for a picnic on the wide beach in Lido Key and for exploring the iconic shops around St. Armands Circle. Tucked away between the sparkling waters of Sarasota Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, St. Armands is a historically beautiful island shopping center, full of lavish courtyards, patios and antiques statues. St. Armands was actually a passion project of our favorite maximalist, Mr. John Ringling, who clearly knew how to make an architectural impression (read above circus bit). Visitors can even immerse themselves deeper into St. Armands’ history by taking a stroll through the “Circus Ring of Fame,” in the Circle Park, a tribute to past circus performing legends.

The allure of the coast beckoned us across the county as we craved a cruise to Venice, just south of the Gulf Coast and offering more than 14 miles of pristine beaches. The area is actually well known for shelling and for finding fossilized shark's teeth, which can easily be spotted in the sand. Venice’s downtown showcases northern Italian-inspired architecture, including landscaped boulevards reminiscent of the Italian city of Venice itself.

The best moments are the least planned, right? I was actually able to snap some of my favorite pictures just from roaming and discovering new neighborhoods with varied vibrant personalities, from beach vibes and nostalgic architecture, to luxe artistry and contemporary flair.

The Sarasota Modern also offers guests cruiser bicycles (and beach chairs and umbrellas) for easy and hands-on exploration of Downtown Sarasota and the surrounding shores.

With tons of safe dining options in Sarasota, finding a memorable meal outside of the hotel (or for delivery/pick-up for in-room dining) was an absolute breeze. We enjoyed an incredible dinner from downtown Italian staple, Bevardi’s Salute! The award-winning chef-owned and operated restaurant crafts up homemade Italian classics with precision and artisan technique. A paradise for wine and cheese lovers, Bevardi’s offers up premium cuts and fresh seafood, such as Dover sol prepared whole and filleted tableside. Oh and the ultimate finale was the tiramisu, so creamy and delicious!

As check-out came along the next day, I shuffled my belongings into my car and made it home within the hour. It was hard to believe that such a short (and easy) ride could provide such new perspective.

I’m thankful that such exploration is offered so nearby with a place as dynamic, welcoming and beautiful as Sarasota County. Although I experienced so much, I felt as though I only scratched the surface of all this unique Florida destination has to offer. One thing is for sure, I can’t wait to return and continue exploring #MySarasota!

Remember to always keep galavanting! xx Alexia
